The Los Carneros or Carneros  district  was established in 1983 and the first district to be  defined by location and climate. It is located on the northern section of San Pablo Bay a estuary of San Francisco Bay.  This district actually straddles both Napa and Sonoma Counties.
Due to its proximity to San Pablo Bay it is much cooler then the Napa Valley.
While many grapes are grown in the district it is best known for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It is also a noted source of grapes to make sparkling wine.

One of the earlier adocates of the district was Louis M. Martini  who in 1942 purchased the Stanley Ranch and began to replant the vineyard.
By the early 1970’s another pioneer of the district, Francis  Mahoney who in conjunction with the University of California at Davis which is America’s leading school for Wine Making and Grape growing began a long term project to see which Clones of Pinot Noir grew best in the district.
By the 1980’s, many of teh world’s leading sparkling wine producers began to take notice of the district and began to buy land in the district.

Today there are 1000 acres of vineyards and xx wineries.
