What is Vernaccia di San Gimignano ?

Vernaccia San Gimignano  What is Vernaccia di San Gimignano ?

Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a white wine produced around the village of San Gimignano.

It was awarded DOC status in 1966 and in 1993 it was upgraded to Italy’s highest DOCG.
While Vernaccia dates back to 1276 in Tuscany its history has been one of struggle.  Considered difficult to grow and farmers replaced with easier and more productive grapes to grow.
It was not until the 1960’s that some farmers wanted to preserve another one of Italy’s unique varieties.
While the name Vernaccia is associated with grapes from other regions, scientists have determined that they are not related or have they been able to determine its origin.

The wine is noted for its crisp acidity with a slightly bitter finish. Up to 10% of other grapes are allowed to be blended with Vernaccia. The use of modern wine making techniques including barrel fermentation or oak aging have greatly improved the overall quality which has surpassed its reputation as a simple country wine.

Reviews for 2014 San Quirico – Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG

 87 Points The Wine Advocate

“Luminous and bright, the 2014 Vernaccia di San Gimignano (100% Vernaccia) opens to pretty mineral notes with soft background notes of peach, melon and spring flower. The wine boasts pretty mineral definition. It adds fullness and structure at the back. This Vernaccia would pair nicely with vegetable tempura or fried calamari rings. The wine is aged in cement tanks.” — 10/30/2015

Does a Vernaccia di San Gimignano age well ?
