Costières de Nîmes  AOC is located in between the City of Nîmes and the western reaches of the Rhone River Valley, in the Department(State) of the Gard. This Appellation was once part of the Languedoc region, it was transferred to the  Rhone Appellation since ethe wines had more in common with the Rhone then the Languedoc.

 

The Red wines of the Costières de Nîmes AOC

The red wines are mainly  a blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault, which are more typical of the Southern Rhone wines  then the Languedoc. Some of the red are like a Baby Chateauneuf du Pape at a fraction of the price.

Flavor Profile: Aromas of  blackberry, it has more structure due to the Mourvèdre, the Syrah and the Grenache add a spicy note.

Food Pairing Ideas: Any Grilled Steak

 

The Rosé wines of the Costières de Nîmes AOC

The Rosé wines  which account for at least 35% on the wines produced in the region are made from the same grapes as the red wines but up to 10% of the wine can be made from adding white grapes such as  Bourboulenc, Clairette blanc, Grenache blanc, Maccabéo, Rolle and Roussanne.

Flavor Profile:  Light and dry, traditionally well balanced and delicate.

Food Pairing Ideas:    Salads, Pasta, and Pizza

 

The White wines of the Costières de Nîmes AOC

The whites are well balanced with aromas of flower and fruit, citrus, and occasionally apple and pear.

Only 5% of the region’s production is White wine. It is made from a blend of the following grapes, Bourboulenc, Clairette blanc, Grenache blanc, Maccabéo, Rolle and Roussanne.

Flavor Profile:   Most are well balanced with aromas of honeysuckle with hints of citrus and  pear. 

Food Pairing Ideas:  Seafood and grilled fish
