Bringing the World Together Organically

In South Australia’s Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since the 1800s near the village of Greenock. They are one of the region’s leading grape growing families consistently growing some of the Barossa’s best quality grapes. After five generations of growing grapes, winemaker and sixth generation family member, Troy Kalleske, established the Kalleske winery and created the Kalleske label. The winery is situated on the family estate where open top fermenters, basket press and barrel store ensure the vineyard realises its full potential as wine.

The vineyard is managed by Troy’s father, fifth generation grape grower, John Kalleske, who has over forty years experience tending the vineyard. The 100-acre vineyard is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon and Chenin Blanc. Vines vary in age with the oldest vineyard dating back to 1875 and an overall average vine age of about 50 years. The vineyard is low yielding and all grapes are grown organically.

There are five wines in the Kalleske range. Clarry’s Barossa White is a blend of Semillon and Chenin Blanc and its partner Clarry’s Barossa Red is a Grenache Shiraz blend. The Greenock Shiraz is a single vineyard wine, made from a superb Shiraz block on the Western edge of the Greenock Creek. The Old Vine Grenache is from a small dry-grown vineyard planted as bush vines on the Kalleske farm in 1935 and the Johann Georg Shiraz is made from a dry-grown vineyard planted on the farm in 1875.

All wines are estate grown and vinified with minimalistic winemaking techniques used to fully capture the essence of the vineyard allowing genuine hand made estate wines to be produced.

Kalleske Clarry’s GSM 2014

94 Points   Australian Wine Companion

“Startling quality. Fresh berried fruit with firm, boney ribs of tannin. Not at all the easy-going quaffer the price might suggest. Licorice, cloves, toast and that sure flush of squished red and black berries. Firmness of tannin is a chief distinguishing factor.”

90 Points  Vinous / Antonio Galloni

“Deep ruby. Perfumed, spice-accented aromas of black raspberry, cherry and candied rose. Sappy and appealingly sweet, offering primary red berry and cherry-vanilla flavors sharpened by a suggestion of white pepper. Finishes with silky tannins, lingering spice and floral notes and noteworthy energy and lift.”

2014 Kalleske Moppa Shiraz

90 Points Wine Spectator

“Espresso and roasted herb flavors add a fresh edge to the core of dense, expressive cassis and plum flavors. A floral detail gains momentum on the finish. Drink now through 2028.”

2013 Kalleske Pirathon Shiraz

94 Points  Australian Wine Companion

“The Gods of Value have big smiles on their faces. This is in the sweet spot for value, quality and style. It’s dark fruited and amply so, but its savoury edges give it a wider appeal. Soft, modestly/appropriately oaked, tidy with tannin and perhaps most importantly, moreish.”

91 Points  Vinous / Antonio Galloni

“Bright purple. Fragrant spice- and smoke-accented aromas of dark berries and cherry pit. Supple and broad on the palate, offering gently sweet blackberry and floral pastille flavors and building suggestions of vanilla and mocha. Supple, sneaky tannins give shape and grip to the long, appealingly sweet finish, which leaves smoky mineral and licorice notes behind.”

90 Points  The Wine Advocate

“Deep garnet-purple, the 2013 Pirathon Shiraz is scented of cassis and blueberry preserves with touches of anise and mocha. Rich, full and mouth-filling, the palate provides plenty of fruit and spice with rounded tannins and balanced freshness for support, finishing with very good length.”

 2012 Kalleske Moppa Shiraz

95 Points   Australian Wine Companion

“Another estate biodynamic vineyard in the Moppa sub-district of Greenock, picked over an astonishingly long period from 24 Feb to 30 Mar, the petit verdot on 11 Apr. Whether it is the touches of viognier (5%) and petit verdot (10%) included, or just the incisive nature of the shiraz, I don’t know, but the all-up effect is a savoury style, with a real point of difference from the other Kalleske ’12 wines, but of similar quality thanks to its mouthfeel and balance. Multi-origin oak (25% new) was skilfully used, with some barrel ferment.”

92 Points  Wine Spectator

“Rich and expressive, with dense flavors of blackberry, licorice, white pepper and sage, finishing with a crème fraîche note that adds to the depth. Offers presence and length. Drink now through 2022.”
